Bureau of Meteorology data (BOM)
A lot of work has been done trying to work out exactly when is the best time of year to attempt a ride across Australia. After exhaustive 'analysis' the 'results' are still open to individual interpretation. The links below summarise each BOM weather station's 9am and 3pm wind data for closer inspection. I believe June, July, and August seem to represent the best months taking into account wind direction (from the West). But these months are of course the coldest. Beyond August in my opinion is simply out of the question, there is a marked change in wind direction in the Great Australian Bight (primarily Western Australia and some of South Australia). Please feel free to look at the information set out below and interpret for yourself what the best month might be.
Weather data summary
This summary pdf document is of each station's observations which include temperature, rainfall, sunshine etc. For each station is my interpretation of the first 3 best months with respect to the wind data (each station's observations, 9am & 3pm wind data linked further below).
